Finntroll: : begins recording new album

FINNTROLL has officially started recording their 6th album at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki! The currently untitled follow-up to 2010's masterpiece Nifelvind will be released worldwide through Century Media Records in late March 2013. In regards to this new album, the band comments on their studio blog here. "Combining our trademark sound with even more influences from non- traditional genres in metal music, we have created 11 songs which show you everything we want to offer. And boy, wasn't that one of the hardest tasks for some time. After all, how do you keep your sound fresh, yet familiar, after 6 albums and 15 years? At some point, we were afraid that the songs are not melodic enough. Then we started to fear they became too melodic. Then we let the songs rest for a while and molded them more in a way that the non-melodic stuff got something to hum with, and the cheesy pop songs were arranged more stripped and aggressive. We were confident, yet sometimes scared what will people think of the stuff we've been doing so hard. What if they hate it? That would be fine, but if they would hate it because the material was uninspiring, boring and done-to-death, that would be a huge disappointment. So, we kept pushing and tried to keep it fresh all the time, while still having the 'this has to be FINNTROLL because no other band sounds this insane' - grinning going on." If you haven't heard FINNTROLL before, let Trollhorn (the guy who rarely plays live with the rest of the band) explain: "FINNTROLL is a Finnish metal band, existing since 1997. We have released...ummm, six albums, I guess [it's actually only 5 albums and 2 EPs so far] and despite of dead members, internal quarrels and constant mischief, we still somehow manage to pull it off. Our musical style is a tint of Black and Death metal combined with Scandinavian and European folk music, spiced with a dose of ska, cartoon-esque-circus-music and whatnot. We also boast occasional Latin music, Psychobilly and Klezmer influences, so it's kinda hard to explain, really. We are pretty much labeled as 'Folk Metal' from the wider perspective, but we've never quite felt like belonging there per se. Basically, we don�t even really care and nor should you." FINNTROLL makes their much anticipated return to North America this week as they embark on a massive headlining tour with Moonsorrow and Swallow The Sun. This is their first tour in this territory in support of their highly acclaimed new slab of folk-rooted metal hymns entitled Nifelvind that is now available everywhere. An extremely innovative new video for the track, "Under Bergets Rot," is now available exclusively through Bloody Disgusting (the world's #1 horror site), so click on the link below to check it out. The eye-popping new clip was Directed and Produced by Leena J��skel�inen and Jessica Koivistoinen for Osuuskunta Animaatiokopla. Bloody Disgusting Routa (guitars) further comments: "This video is definitely a very special video for us. We have been thinking of doing an animation video for years actually, but for some reason we never did it, until now. With the release of the Nifelvind album we were asked to do 2 video. Century Media gave us free hands to choose from which ever songs we wanted. The first video was made for 'Solsagan' and was made by Finnish company Vasara Films. As we have always done our music videos by ourselves, as me being a writer and director with the full support of the rest of the band of course, it was very difficult to let someone else do it. Even though the basic concept came from the band, it still didn't feel right. After the 'Solsagan' video we weren't 100% convinced about letting someone else do our videos. So we were thinking what to do with the next video... "We decided to do the second video for the song 'Under Bergets Rot' and this one we were thinking about doing by ourselves as usual, just to get the right, FINNTROLL spirit into it. We got the idea of doing a video that's happening in this weird, out of this world jazz-club, where we would play as the house band. The story in the song is more or less about the song that this dude hears, and even though he hasn't heard the song before, he knows it and gets mesmerized by it. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do."

Both Katla and Vreth are part of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland. "All cultures have similarities in their myths and folklore. Tales of bitter dead walking again, sagas of good and evil and songs of divine ascension," states Katla. "That in some form probably date back to the beginning of speech and song, are a fascinating lore that maybe defines our humanity but also our feelings of loss concerning our contacts to nature and the bestiality that lies within every human being. This album is a celebration of those myths, some new, some ageless. Some true, some complete nonsense. That is the nature of folklore. Under every root and stone lays a story heard but untold."
